Are these numbers exact?
No. They're common hobbyist guidelines for healthy adults. Babies, sick animals and specific localities can need different setups. Use a species care guide and a reptile vet for anything serious, and measure with a digital probe thermometer or temp gun, not stick-on dials.
What are Ferguson zones?
A way of grouping reptiles by how much they bask. Zone 1 animals mostly stay in shade, Zone 4 animals bake in full sun. The zone tells you how strong the UVB at the basking spot should be. Match the bulb and its distance to the zone using the manufacturer's chart or a UV index meter.
How deep should substrate be?
Around 2 to 4 inches suits most species. Burrowers and bioactive setups usually want 4 to 6 inches or more so tunnels hold their shape.
Why does floor space matter more than gallons?
A tall tank and a long tank can hold the same gallons but give a ground dweller very different room and a very different heat gradient. Check length and width for ground species, height for climbers.
